I said "somewhat skewed". I realize Harper's a goof.
Note, there was a brief conservative government (June 4, 1979, to March 3, 1980.) during Trudeau's reign.
Also these numbers fail to take into consideration the global context. The world economy experienced stagflation in the early 80's and it certainly wasn't Trudeau's doing, nor was the 2008 Wall Street meltdown Harper's doing. |

It's more a list of economic "indicators" somewhat skewed against Harper.
While I don't want to set off a bunfight on these curling-oriented forums, I would like to set the record straight - as I tried to do in my column.
And while I am most definitely not a Harper fan, I did not set out to "skew" the numbers. I merely looked at all of the key stats - most of which have earned the status of "household words" - while focusing on economic indicators (jobs and economic growth) that the Tories have been bragging up and misrepresenting in their non-stop taxpayer-funded advertising.
And believe me, I held my fire. I could have presented a much grimmer picture and brought up, for example, the increasingly "skewed" distribution of incomes in Canada, poverty rates among families with children, or noted that under Pierre Trudeau's stewardship (1968-1984), the real economy (inflation-adjusted GDP per capita) grew at a faster rate than for ANY Conservative PM since 1968.
A couple of my other columns that may be of interest:

Noticed a article in The Ottawa Citizen Jan 22nd written by the eminent statistician Alex Roberts. If you are a believer in 'Stephen Harper Master Economist' it would do you good to check it out. A Great job. |
