Get Off your Lazy Butts!!!!
So, I see the cash spiel in Selkirk only had 5 men's teams signed up. I also heard Andy Stewart on the radio yesterday talking about how much more cash is available on the circuit this year compared to the first year about 20 years ago. It's about 10 times the cash now.
And here you are, with an incredibly committed sponsor (which as you know are VERY hard to come by) and you guys don't even have the courtesy of curling in (or telling them that your curling in) their event.
No wonder they are considering cancelling it. And when (NOT IF) but WHEN it happens, you'll have no one to blame but your selves. All you guys/teams that think your "The Next One".....have a little consideration for the people that make this happen for you. The sponsors and the organizers.
Most of you are too selfish to even realize this is directed AT YOU!!

That's just fine and dandy then, isn't it. The point being made is the lack of support from the very grass roots group that this tour and these events is supposed to benefit most.....is just not there.
Only 12 teams committed to an event that almost everyone can drive to, eliminated the costs of rooms, every meal on the road, etc. (you know....those expenses that everyone claims keeps them home from so many events) and still only 12 teams committed. That is just plain embarassing.
Sponsor may not cancel this year, but sponsor HAS to be asking "what the hell are we doing this for? Why should we help them, when they won't even help themselves?"

Only 9 teams last year. Grassie beat Dave Elias in the final to win $2900.00.
Ladies side had a full compliment of 16 teams, which was won by Kim Link over Jill Thurston.
How long do you think this sponsor is going to keep throwing money at an event that cannot draw any better than this? Mark this down......it won't be for much longer.

By the way....this is the exact wording of the tower add on the right hand side of the Manitoba Curling Tour website as of 2 minutes ago.
"The One Insurance Curling Classic is looking for entries for this year’s event.
We currently have 14 women’s entries & 5 men’s entries. We do NOT want to cancel the bonspiel so please send in your entry!"
Maybe it's time for an update, IF there really are 12 Men's teams entered and entries paid.

i agree with you smartG, teams have to realize there is a lot more to an event than just entering. It is a lot easier for organizers to get things done when they don't have to spend time chasing teams. Teams have to commit and get there money in. Once an event is gone, then it is gone for good.

Thought some of you might find this quote very interesting. It was made in a post about what teams do you allow in to your spiels? If a bigger name comes along and enters late, do you accept them in place of a lesser known team?
While that is not the case here, it's still a pretty applicable position to take.....whether you have lots of teams or too few teams. TEAMS MUST TAKE RESPONSIBILITY......or there will be fewer and fewer events to curl in.
QUOTE:
"Teams have to take responsibility for entering events on time. There is a lot more to running bonspiels than just taking entries. If you miss a deadline, then it is your own fault. You won’t do it a second time."
END OF QUOTE
Anybody care to guess the author or the date of the above quote?

A 33% increase in entries is pretty good. How many teams were the organizers hoping to get?

No it's not!!! It's crap.
This event, being so close to the city should be full. And, it should have been full for at least a month already.
12 teams for a "drive to" event is crap!!!
Same thing happened to the summer spiel in Warren. It was an MTC event, best ice you could ask for (IN AUGUST), and it got something like 11 or 12 teams for the competitive division. Where is that event being held now? Oh yeah, it's not being held.
Not like there were a bunch of other spiels going on to compete with it either.

OK, enough with the trash talk goatman, I think your MB colleagues get your point. You attract more bees with honey than vinegar.

If someone can post on here when the Men's division of this bonspiel actually fills up, then I'll give it a rest.
Otherwise, I haven't completed what I set out to do with this post.
Honey....vinegar....whatever works.

Almost forgot to come back and tell you who to credit this quote to. It was none other than Andy Stewart - October, 2005.

Only 9 Men's teams again this year?
And, a drop of 2 Ladies teams.
I am beginning to hear the bell toll.

Lets see...
Selkirk...
Traditionally...crappy ice (dead straight)....crappy facility (warm weather wreaks havoc on that building with dripping the lovely dark yellow bumps)...prize money(payout is fine, but to go in the right direction, the event needs ot qualify 8.
The tour has made some changes and i don't think everyone is up to speed. If all the fringe teams were aware that points gained in events played leads to a possible spot in the Safeway championships.
I love events that cry about teams no coming to their event. How about going out and marketing your event? Give the teams a reason to play. Show them the points they can aquire or whatever may make the event attractive enough for them to attend yours vs another the next weekend. It would be great for all the teams to play "every" weekend, but that is not going to happen. Most teams follow a week on week off scenario and if your event lies on an off weekend, tough luck.
Selkirk is a fringe team event at best. They should be selling it to those teams. OR. Move the event to winter when their building can handle it. AND do something about their ice and/or rocks.
Selkirk isnt the only one having troubles. Carberry (who has the Select berth) isnt filling either. That's strange. Swan River is also having its annual whoas. I think we need The Tour or the MCA to show the teams what is on the line as per points how the fringe teams can scoop up one of the Provincial berths playing on the tour.
So if you are such a smart goat. help in the fixing of the situaton instead of instigation and accusasion. I think a lack of knowledge may all that is the problem.

Well, they did something about the Ice and Rocks.
I wouldn't say too little too late. Just a little late.

Well, I don't see the draw up for the Galaxy over at Rossmere. Are the organizers a little bit behind, or is this just another MCT event that cannot or will not fill up, and the organizers are "juggling" the teams they've got in the last few moments before posting the draw?
I'm guessing (because of the frequency that it happens) that this is exactly what the organizers are going through again.
Too bad.

Now Gimli event got cancelled too??? This is just laughable.
Larry: Whine....whine.....whine.....how come there's no spiel in (insert almost any town/event here) this year Joe?
Joe: Because we didn't support it last year Larry. I told Moe to enter us, but I guess he had better things to do.
Moe: No, that's not true. I had nothing else going on. I was just to lazy to get off my arse and enter our team.
And so the story repeats itself over and over......until all the MCT spiels were cancelled due to a lack of sponsors willing to put out a bunch of cash for a bunch of guys too lazy to enter these events.
Oh well.......it's not like we didn't see it coming.......
Hey, maybe go to the MCA for help. Nope, they're too busy deciding which teams to eliminate so that they can make up "the perfect draw" for the MCA.

Of all the events this year, the ones with entries $400 or less did very well.
Maybe the organizers should take notes?
