Pat Simmons new team?
I just read an article in the Edmonton Sun regarding an announcement Pat Simmons is making next week about a new team for next season. Anyone know who?

So it's confirmed Pat is joining Team Bottcher. Didn't they announce recently that Thomas Scoffin joined the team or am i losing my marbles like Manitoba Legend?

Youre not crazy... Scoffin joined the team or it was stated publically he joined the team.. I guess scoffin has been thrown overboard for simmons..

That's unfortunate for Thomas. I'm not sure I can blame Bottcher. Picking up Simmons is a coup and maybe it can re-generate the early promise the team displayed.

Someone had posted it on here that Scoffin was joining Bottcher, but without a source. The team never made an announcement, at least not publically, about any team changes until now.

I fully understand the choices of both Team Boettcher and Simmons. What I don't understand is, a young team picking up a proven world class champion skip and playing him at third. You want to go on an Olympic run? Your best chance is with experience. And maybe learn a bit on the way. Ego getting in the way???

I know this is a remote possibility, and CZ forum members usually have a more in-depth understanding of the top curlers' personalities and motivations, but perhaps the people directly involved in this team decision discussed all the possibilities and came to this mutually agreed upon plan of action.

I would also assume a lot of thought has been put into this decision by the team. Just on paper, doesn't make sense. Just an observation.

Russ played third when Gushue picked him up for the Olympics, did he not? I realize that for one event, not for the season.

Incorrect. He threw second stones and skipped the game.

Simmons had his best sustained success at third, aside from the time he accidentally won the Brier. Maybe that's his preferred position in the grand scheme of things.

I recall he made a pretty good draw to the button to win the Brier.

There is no doubt Pat is a great curler. None. His accomplishments speak for themselves.
The real question : is he the right teammate for this team?

If I had an open cheque book like Arnie Asham I would have re-booted Team Carruthers - ie. Pat skipping, Moskowy throwing 3rd, Reid at 2nd and Sammy and the other guy sharing front/fifth player duties. Now that woulda been a team! (But I don't see Reid stepping down again, he's a legit Top 8 Canadian skip now)
Youre timing couldn't be better... You suggest all that days after the Carruthers team wins a grand slam lol

i think he will work great. he has a ton of experience , really easy to work with and him and brandon seem like they have very similar personalities so it should make getting used to eachother easy and make the transition smooth

As we all should know by now, team chemistry is a more important and more determining factor than individual playing skill. You could put the 4 best curlers in the world together on a team, and they likely would not be among the top 10 teams in the world. Because there is more to a curling team than mere skill.
It would seem that, 'on paper', it would make the most sense for Simmons to be throwing Third rocks and Skipping the game on his new team. Perhaps that was discussed as an option, and perhaps not. We'll likely never know. Perhaps they are keeping that option available for the future. We may or may not find out.
They're going to give it a try with Simmons playing Third, and see what happens. It's their decision to make, in any case. If it doesn't work out, hopefully they'll make an adjustment.
If we are to go with pure logic, then that would dictate that the best fit for Simmons is as Lead of Glenn Howard's team, with Middaugh and Hart - simply because those 3 guys will surely, at several points in the season, benefit from the services of an in-house chiropractor...
