MBOpen minor draw mistakes: Several teams played 2 games of their first 6 at the same club. One of these teams I know of played on sheet 2 at the Granite twice in their first 6 games. Others said they met the same team twice early in the spiel.
MASSIVE DRAW MISTAKE: limiting the spiel to 256 teams, the lowest total in OVER SEVENTY YEARS! (1943)
The MCA bonspiel weekend is by far the largest revenue generating weekend of the year for Wpg curling clubs. Seeing the 8 sheet Heather and Assin. Memorial unused and empty during both draws on Thursday night us not good. Heather wasn't used until noon on Friday. How many thousands of $$ in gross sales did these clubs lose?
The 30+ teams left on the waiting list would have filled the ice at both the Heather and Assin. Mem. and filling the tills with some much needed expense paying cash.
Everyone realizes the popularity of and participation in the big bonspiel is different and admire any attempt to retain its glory, but be smart about it and open the number of entries back up, with a deadline of course.
Offer this challenge to the computer science department at the U of M or Red River... ask them to create a master draw program for the MBOpen spiel utilizing all Wpg sheets of ice, where club teams don't play eachother, teams don't play at their home clubs, end sheets are not repetitive and the number of entries is variable.
Another issue is the fact that groups of teams are moving together from one draw to the next. I saw the Andrew Swan team at least 3 times in 6 games (no offence intended but I want to see as many teams as possible) Mix it up a little. Games are 8 ends so there is lots of time between draws meaning that the possibility of back to back games can work. Just as long as the clubs are not at opposite ends of the city. This would allow teams to get 2 draws in a row off that will lead to more socializing.
It can be done, it's basic computer programming (if, then...)
