Funny how manitoba ladies curling goes.
A team like Jones is a monster in world and canadian circles but just another one of the boys in the local scotties.
Currently tied at 3 with unbeaten Barb Spencer after 5 with Spencer holding hammer.
One reason I'm so proud of JJ is that she's defied the odds and gone on to 8 Canadian championship, pulled down 4 wins and 2 seconds (one on the fluke by Holland and the other getting legit horse-whipped by Kelly Scott when Scott & Schraeder were the monsters of the midway)
I've also taken liberties in calling some of our non-JJ teams that get to the Scotts (when JJ doesn't or is Team Canada) as 'Manitoba Roadkill' and I'll say it again
JJ gives Manitoba its best chance to win.
Top skip, great front end, great training both physical and psychological.
However, teams like Spencer, Harvey, Cathy O, Jill Staub, etc. get all juiced up at the Scotts and try to take JJ's scalp
But here's my prediction for top 5 or 6 Manitoba teams if they get to Red Deer.
JJ - 8-3, playoffs for sure, can't get gold if Holland runs hot!
Carey - 7-4, tie-breaker but lose out due to first experience.
Spencer - 6-5, no playoffs
Harvey - 4-7, out of it early, close with some meaningless wins.
Cathy O - 6-5 or 7-4, just doesn't have the great technical skills of young monsters like Homan or old monsters like Kleibrink. Better lineup than she had last year!
Thurston - 5-6, just not enough shots made to be more than an also-ran
JJ , chelsey and cathy could have good performances and all would obviously stand a great chance of making playoffs
janet harvey and jill thurston could probably pull 5-6 records at best, i agree there
but putting barb spencer at 6-5 is a little generous, she hasnt done anything in her previous appearances and i dont believe eve had a winning record so there's no reason to assume she would now. Barb would probably run close to the 2-9 she finished last time..4-7 at best.

Does Manitoba use head to head results to break ties or is it decided by a TB game?
In one group Jen Jones has to win period. She would then be undefeated against whoever she ties with. In the other group Cathy O also must win, but her early loss to DeRiviere could cost her the H2H tiebreak. Hard to have predicted, but both teams may miss the playoffs - if they both advance it will be an awesome 3-4 game!

Cathy might finish plus .500, I agree but she defeated Carey last year with a patchwork squad and then faded badly at the Scotts, her only shining moment was her ferocious cougar-like scratching of JJ in their round-robin game.
Spencer was a total disappointment the last time she repped Manitoba cuz she was lost in the draw as JJ was the feature Team Canada. But I really think she's come on strong and put together a much more solid team than she had last time. I really do think she could push 6-5 if she gets out of the cougar-pak in Manitoba.
Carey would be a delightful team to watch at the Scotts but their inexperience would eventually catch up with them at the higher level and render them unable to conquer monsters like Holland, Kleibrink, Homan - so they'd have to be near perfect against the rest of the field and that task is very hard, just ask JJ.
Harvey and Thurston can make all the shots - they just can't shot-stack like the monsters.
barb may have a stronger team , but like i said she's been there more than once and hasnt done well in any of her tries. She's just not a big stage performer
im pulling for chelsey to take this because id love to see her get the break though..and im not even really a fan of her team. however seeing a completely new team out of manitoba would be a breath of fresh air at the scotties when it looks like every other provincial playdown is shaping up to give us a repeat appearance of some team

No. MM is out of it. Not enough teams would fall to 3 losses to bring her into contention. She's a strong team. Just showin' it today.
oops. CC got her deuce. MM7-CC6 playin' 8th. Game is on.

your right, sorry..
so it looks like chelsey will claim first place in the group even if she did lose and cathy and lisa will play tiebreaker to decide 2nd place in the group.
but chelsey is now within 1 so game on

Harvey's going to have to pick up a triple to challenge CathyO for the tiebreaker/playoff spot. Looks like Lisa is in. Goal #1 - make it to post RR play.

So Harvey got her deuce and Carey tied it up. C0 - 2 up coming home WITH. Carey needs to steal the win.

Even with a loss in her final round-robin game, Chelsea Carey wins her group! I believe she will face Barb Spencer in the 1 vs. 1 page playoff game regardless of what happens in the final round robin draw.
Cathy O will have to go through a tiebreaker against DeRiviere to make the playoffs.
Jennifer Jones is in a "must-win" situation from now until the end of the tournament. One more loss and she will be eliminated. We've seen her battle through such circumstances before (tie-breakers at the national scotties) but we've also seen her fade and fail to make the playoffs of some Slam tournaments. We'll have to see which team shows up this weekend!
I'm cheering for one of the "Big 3" teams to win it out. I don't have as much faith in Barb Spencer's team to make the playoffs in the national STOH.

So let me get this straight:
JJ has to beat thurston today, then beat her again an hour later just to get into the playoffs. Then she has to beat whoever finishes 2nd in the other pool (likely Cathy O). Next, she has to win the semi final and final.
That's 5 games in a row! Of course it wouldnt be the first time shes ran the table.
How the heck did this happen? Really wish this was on tv.
Perhaps JJ doesn't care enough because she already has her olympic birth wrapped up? Still, I can't see her going down without a fight....

michelle sprung a 3 on chelsey to win 1-8 and cathy ran janet out of rocks
so cathy and lisa will play a tiebreaker to determine 2nd place in the group
alright..now on to the more interesting match today..thurston v.s jones

JJ's team has been a fixture at the National Scotties since 2005. The team loves this event and you have to believe they have the desire to get there. I don't think an early Olympic berth would have such an impact on their focus (this team would pretty much be guaranteed an Olympic berth through their consistently high CTRS rankings, this just happened to be the way they officially earned their spot.) Could just be a case of the usual JJ - early inconsistencies and struggles in the event, followed by finding a new gear when it's time to make a playoff run. Check out the recent Canada Cup! The team's been in this situation before and are definitely capable to win this thing out - it's all down to execution now.

Great Points!
It's like a light switch goes on or something...
But do you really think that Jill will have the stamina to grind it out in the playoffs?
I just hope they can find their winning form. And if they do...LOOK OUT!

Yup! 2 tiebreakers: Jones vs. Thurston, Cathy O vs. DeRiviere. Winners face off in the 2 vs. 2 Page Playoff game.

Isn't there a 3-way tie. Jones, Thurston and Robertson at 5 - 2?

Well haven't we seen this before?
Jones has made it a habit of lolligaging during the round robin but then turn it up in the tiebreakers and playoffs. I wouldn't be surprised a bit if she does it again.

Nope! Robertson finished the round robin at 4-3. Losses to Thurston, Boettcher and Jones.

I don't really have a stand out type of favorite. That being said, I think Chelsea could really benefit from a trip to the Tournament of Hearts.
