McEwen is still the other co-fave but he might have a difficult time when confronted by Canada's best teams should he slip by Stoughton and others at the Manitoba championships.
Carruthers, Lyburn and Irwin are the only others I can see winning next year.
btw - whatever state manitoba mens curling is in - womens is in far worse shape!
With Carey gonzo - if Jones doesn't represent its gonna be tough for any other Manitoba womens team to compete in the tough-slugging of canadian womens curling. (ie. Homan, Lawton, Sweeting, Middaugh)
To be fair about McEwen, he does play against the top teams on the tour and has success against them. If he somehow gets past Stoughton, he would hold his own at the Brier.
Yikes about state of womens curling in the Keystone Province. Might as well let Jones punch their ticket out of Manitoba now and get it over with. We better hope some junior teams get strong soon and stay together for the big leagues.

Lots of nice-looking fawns coming out to the ladies game from junior in manitoba. Birchard, Kaatz, etc. The main problem is some are gobbled up as front-enders for other provinces.
Somehow if a top unit can be assembled they might be ready to take the mantle from JJ in a couple years. But for now its Jones or nothing. And in that convoluted MB Scottie format, its all too easy for some fawn to heat up and upset the applecart. (Einarson almost pulled it off last year, she really had Carey on the ropes)
The Manitoba Scotties format is not convoluted at all. 16 teams, 2 pools of 8, top 2 teams in each pool advance to a page playoff. Seems pretty straight forward to me. Now the mens provincials, that's a different story!

I don't really care about woman's curling but In mens curling I think provincials should be split out over two weekends. The first weekend should be the bottom (24 or 16 ) seeds playing off for 4 qualifier spots with the top 4 teams receiving a bye to the next weekend (format similar to olympic pre-trials). This would result in a second weekend where 8 teams play off to represent the province.
The second weekend could be a double knock out page like is currently used or some form of round robin. I think this would result in more meaningful games for the weaker teams along with less meaningless games for the top curlers. Another advantage is people wouldn't need to take nearly a week off work like in the current system. This is the only way i can think of to solve the increasingly popular debate of what size provincials should be and allows the weaker teams to compete and better teams the chance to take a break.
The first weekend could be held in a curling club and the second weekend would be held at an arena resulting in less rentals needed.

I don't understand at all why people want to change the format of the Men's.
Cons:
- Top teams only play 1 game a day on Wed, Thu and then play 2 or 3 per day
- The event requires 3 days off work
Pros:
- Consistently produces a top team as winner
- Classy event second only to Brier and Slams
- Arena ice and great rocks
- 32 team field allows for all teams with a chance to compete
- Builds up teams experience (arena ice, aggressive rocks, championship pressure)
- Prepares the winner for the Brier
- Spectators can have an awesome Friday of games starting on the noon draw (A qualifiers, B qualifiers, 1st round of final 8)
- Team can lose twice and still win
- Usually a great patch with lots of players and spectators
Not even a close call!
