Dekalb Superspiel - Women

Wow! Organizers were looking for a full draw of 32 teams...and only managed to attract 19! What does this say about competitive women's curling?

Too many events? The teams missing were at the grand slam last weekend...Team Jones were in China the week before.

Yep and there is another Slam next week in Thunder Bay which would make a difference. I also think the top teams try to reduce the number of events they enter the first year after the Olympics.

Purse

$45K is nothing to sneeze at. However the champ gets about $15K, and it tails off in a hurry from there. Only first or second would make expenses.

Curling prize money sucks. I hope the teams' sponsors are making it worthwhile for top tier curlers because if not they could make more at the local pulp mill.

OK...maybe the "top" teams are over taxed and stretched (stressed?) out...but that opens up a half dozen spots for those 2nd tier foursomes who aspire to greater things! Where are all those teams?

Yes fair question and there are probably various reasons for it besides payouts.

I think a lot of the big name teams are just pointed at the GSOC event for the week. Some teams seem to just have their events more spaced out (like Koe and Homan who seem to limit their events from 1-2 weeks apart from each other), maybe to keep the players fresh and to keep them from peaking too soon and so early into the season and work/family/school commitments in between.
