If you read the article closely, it reports on the television ratings for this year's Scotties and Brier. The whole-event average for the Brier was very slightly higher but the Scotties playoffs did better than the Brier. As far as TV itself is concerned, 2019 was nearly a push. Therefore, the income streams from TV should’ve also been about equal, thus the portion of the prize payout derived from the TV revenue should also be at or nearly equal.
On the paid attendance, yes, the Brier had the clear lead on the Scotties. Whatever portion of the prize purse derives from that should be divided along similar proportions.
Add those together, and I’d expect that the distance between them is smaller than the difference in the purses this year. That should be narrowed.
Of course, prize purses need to be determined in advance. It’s not the 50-50 raffle, and yoi can’t wait to see what the gate take was. You’d have to use a forecast best guess, and that can be tricky given different cities and whether or not said city has a big snowstorm during one event not the other, etc.
