The 24th edition of the Lloyd Gunnlaugson Memorial Senior Bonspiel is set to begin on Wednesday (Oct.24th) with 24 men's teams and nine in the women's division at the Thistle Curling Club in Winnipeg.
This year the winner or highest finishing eligible team in the
women's division will earn a berth in the Tim Hortons Senior Women's Provincial Championship to be held in Souris in February.
The women's field in the Gunnlaugson is headed by reigning
Manitoba Senior champion Laurie Deprez of Stonewall, who has a provincial berth in Souris as defending champion. Challengers are expected to be 2011 Gunnlaugson winner Lois Fowler of Brandon, 2011 provincial Senior champion Debbie Popovic of Fort Garry, 2011 Canadian Masters champion Joyce McDougall of Brandon, and Hall of Famer Chris Scalena (with Lori Pelissier throwing fourth stone) of Thistle. The nine teams are divided into two groups for round robin play, the top two in each advancing to the playoffs.
The defending men's champion is Murray Woodward of Ste. Anne.
His team faces a notable field that includes top seed Clare De Blonde of Fort Rouge, who won the senior Neil Andrews Legends Classic in Brandon earlier this month. Andrews runner-up and 2011 McDiarmid Lumber trophy winner Brian Fowler of Brandon is the number two seed, followed by Woodward
and Ron Westcott of Fort Rouge.
Senior mainstays Carl German of East St. Paul, Lionel Walz of
Pembina, and Reg Malanchuk of Fort Rouge also are expected to be in contention for the six-team playoffs.
Two newcomers to senior ranks will be making their debuts at the age 50-plus level, when Randy Dutiaume of Thistle and Andy Stewart of Stonewall take their first shots in the double knockout event.
The Gunnlaugson draw times are 6:00pm and 9:00pm on Wednesday
and Thursday, followed by all-day action, 9:00am, 12:00, 3:00, 6:00 and 9:00pm on Friday and Saturday. Sunday's playoffs are scheduled for 9:30am. 1:00pm, and the finals at 4:30pm.
