CurlON adds 3rd CTRS berth to Provincials

In an announcement that came out this week, Scott McDonald was awarded a 3rd CTRS berth directly into the Provincials after conflicts through two qualifying weekends with Grand Slam events adds challenges to their qualifying opportunities.

Only fair...I guess it’s hard to coordinate events.

It's been an interesting couple of days.

-what the above doesn't say unless you dive into the link is that CurlOn took away a qualifying spot from an event that had already closed registration that is occurring next weekend

-CurlOn made this announcement against their own "final report" on the Tankard structure. The report clearly states 2 CTRS teams and 2 teams each from 4 other events.

-the announcement was made after competition entry closed and ranking ballots were sent out

-after many emails/social media posts expressing surprise/dismay, and offering alternative solutions (add an 11th team to the tankard, take the spot from an event that hasn't closed registration yet allowing teams to make an educated choice), CurlOn doubled down on breaking their own rules.

There are many more nuances, but they are for another post.

It is worth noting that almost universally, nobody has an issue with Team McDonald going to the Tankard. They have played a ton this year and achieved much success. The dismay is centered around last minute rule changes and the feeling that player's voices are not being heard.

With 22 teams in the two Curl On cashspiels, and 3 CTRS teams that makes a total of
only 25 teams attempting to represent Ontario at the Brier. If this doesn't show competitive curling is broken in Ontario, I don't know what does.

Will the Ontario Curling Association make concessions to other teams that have conflicts with the qualifying dates?

It is incredible how quickly the OCA has altered and probably permanently changed the competitive curling landscape in Ontario. Entries in Tankard has dwindled rapidly. They have eliminated Challenge, Colts and Intermediates for other competitive curlers. At this rate, they might as well just select 12 teams from the rankings and save everyone the time and cost of playing down.

One solution:

Provincials - 16 team triple KO.

Teams are:

1 team - Defending champion
2 teams - CTRS
12 teams - from four regional playdowns with up to 16 teams each playing a double KO for 3 spots
1 team - Challenge round
OR (even better)
1 team - from a Colts competition in which top 15 ranked teams and anyone who has played the Tankard provincial in the last two years is excluded (guarantees a new team every year).

Guaranteed that with 16 teams at provs more entries will be received.

More up and coming teams will experience arena ice.

Teams eliminated from provincials can go home and save hotel costs.

Hotels could be partially subsidized depending on total entries.
