Continental Cup 2019

Team play, Mixed Doubles, Team Scrambles,Mixed Team Scrambles (that our Canadian skips are very enthused about), oh my! All kicks off in Vegas on Thursday.

Yeah it's a fun event for funsies but looking forward to seeing the team mixups etc. Can't complain about more curling on TV, too!

I fly out on Wednesday to go see it in person this time. (Assuming no flight problems due to the US gov’t shutdown, that is.)

The weather forecast isn’t very promising though. It’s supposed to rain there Tuesday through Thursday, and temperatures are never supposed to get out of the 50s Fahrenheit. iirc, the arena had a frosty ice problem when it rained there a couple of years ago during the event.

Just got back to my hotel room after some exploring. Had my first curling celebrity sighting by the elevators as Vic, Cheryl, and Russ were on their way to some other elevators.

Opening ceremony is at 7:30 local.

Hehe. No, we weren’t on the same elevator.

Still, that’s not a bad idea... maybe that’d be a good commercial for the event...some curling fans sharing an elevator with Vic while he counts the floors.

How is the weather. Just wondering if some water pool play will be happening.

Should be team Europe, no world about it with no Asian teams where is team Korea? Those ladies were fun to watch.

The weather forecast is cool. Highs aren’t supposed to crack 60F (15.5C) throughout. And there’s a 70% chance of rain tomorrow. Supposed to get sunny after that.

And after the opening ceremony, I saw a good third of the curlers taking to the gaming tables.

How about the word "EXACTLY". I laugh every time he says it. Love him though.

Looks like Koe's in some sort of pain. Wobbly but also moves awkwardly/doing leg/hip stretches.

bad idea to start a drinking game any time these commentators make a mistake on a game they are watching live. if you do that you'll be wasted by the mid way point.

also. i know this is just some joke of an event but i thought every year would alternate between team world v.s north america and team world v.s canada. what happened to that and where are the asian teams

If you’re here at the casino and Jennifer Dodds starts gambling in the same table you are, you’d best fold and walk away. She was part of a 7 in a team 1st end just last Saturday and just now put up a 6 in a mixed 1st end, so clearly she’s got a strong case of luck virus raging. 😀

I was also wondering about Kevin Koe...he seemed to be huffing and puffing and I don’t think he was lifting the rock on his delivery like he usually does.

The set-up here is awesome in the arena with everyone given a 1-ear FM radio listening device so they can hear the TSN coverage in real time. (I’ve brought my own radio and easily found the frequency, just because I like my own headphones better.)

The ice did quickly get frosty thanks to the humidity being caused by the rain here. They rescraped and repebbled the ice at the break before the 5th end, but even so the curl was still enormous. It’ll probably be like this for the other two draws today, but the good news is it’s supposed to be sunny and clear from Friday onwards (though still cool) so it should get better as the points per game increase.

Looked almost neurological though he (Koe) was also doing these leg stretches. Hope he just overdid it yesterday in practice and something he'll bounce back from.

Scores online

I find it troubling that the Continental cup scores, are nowhere to be found on this, the biggest online curling site, yet the little rocks mixed doubles for the visually impaired scores from Estonia are posted here. Yes you've made your deal with Sportsnet, but scores are scores.

Big picture. More score updates for all events means more followers means more viewers which means more viewers for your Sportsnet slams which means more commercial income. More Humpty breakfasts!!

Post the scores!

Overheard in a hotel corridor just now: Ben Hebert telling Dawn McEwen on their way over to the arena, in his usual funny way, “well, we can’t do any worse! Literally!”

That almost came off as downplaying it a bit considering what everyone's been observing (minus the TSN commentators bizarrely enough), but hope he's feeling better and ready to throw some rock in the evening!

The arena seems to me to be about 35% full in the morning draws, about 50-60% in the afternoons, and 70% or better in the evening. Certainly the largest 50/50 raffle pot was last night...topped $10,000.

It’s my first year here in person so I don’t have previous experience to compare to. It’s possible the TSA not getting paid by Trump (plus the cool weather) might have put some off. I was concerned enough about maybe getting stuck here that I looked into the costs of cancelling this trip before I
decided to come anyway. I’m glad I did as it’s a lot of fun to be here, especially with this team scramble day today. It was doing my head in trying to keep who-was-where straight!

I was near Gerry a little while ago and thought about talking to him about all the forum bugs, but thought better of it.

Great game between the scramble team w/ Koe and Mouat. Didn't see any sign of discomfort from the Koedog and he looked very happy. Chris and Brett fit in with Benny and Kev wonderfully.
