Final bonspiel placement?
Each year, my team participates in a weekend bonspiel at one of the great curling clubs in the Midwest. These are typically in a 32 team, 4 event, 3 game guarantee format. Win your first two games, you're in the 1st Event; lose your first, win your second, you're in the 2nd Event; win your first, lose your second, you're in the 3rd Event; lose your first two, you're in the 4th Event. After that, it's a single elimination tournament with the eight teams in your Event.
We recently won the 2nd Event of a bonspiel, losing our first game and then winning the next four. On our way home, my team had a discussion about where a 2nd Event championship places a team amongst the 32 teams at a bonspiel like this. I'm wondering if anyone has any opinions out there on this topic.
Can we claim no higher than 9th place - since we were in the 2nd Event and there were eight teams in the 1st Event? Or could we say 'tied for 3rd' since we are one of only three teams with a 4-1 record at the bonspiel? (The 1st Event runner-up would be 2nd place overall.) Or something else?
I realize that this is entirely an academic question! But it would be nice to have a straightforward 'placement' from a bonspiel to share with non-curling family and friends. Nobody understands what '2nd Event' means without too much explanation!
Thanks and good curling!
