2012 Manitoba Scotties
Qualification begins this Thursday, Nov 10, with the Scotties Berth Bonspiel. The event runs until Monday, Nov 14, and will qualify 2 teams into the provincial playdowns in January.
Two teams have already qualified. Cathy Overton-Clapham is the defending champion, and Jennifer Jones has qualified through CTRS points.
The next berth will be awarded, December 12, at the end of the MCT Championship, when the highest ranked team on the Manitoba Curling Tour, (not already qualified), is awarded the berth.

2011 Scotties
How is Cathy Overton-Clapham eligible for the returning champions berth in the Scotties when she is the only player from that team that is returning?
Is the womens field not the same where you need at least 3 of the same teammates to return?

Breanne Meakin was the original third when they went through the regional playdowns. Breanne was considered the 5th during the provincial tournament, and at the national tournament. Since Leslie Wilson is the 5th on the team Cathy, Breanne and Leslie are the 3 from the returning team.

She is #1 in the MCT standings, my guess is she is most likely going to get the MCT Berth at the end of the MCT championship in December

Thus far Kim Link and Darcy Robertson have won the A qualification round, and advanced to the finals
The B qualification round takes place tonight at 6 PM Central, and will feature Kelsey Boettcher vs Meghan Armit, and Lois Fowler vs Barb Spencer. The winners will advance to the semi-finals and wait for the C qualifier winners.

The two B qualifying teams are Kelsey Boettcher and Barb Spencer.
The C qualifiers take place today at 2pm Central time. C1 is Janet Harvey vs Lois Fowler. The winner of this game will advance to the Semi-Final playing Barb Spencer. C2 is Michelle Montford vs Meghan Armit. The winner will advance to the semi-final playing Kelsey Boettcher.

You are correct! Manitoba Berths breakdown as followed:
11 Berths from Regional Play
2 Berths from Scotties Berth Bonspiel
1 Berth from CTRS Points (J.Jones has qualified)
1 Berth From Manitoba Curling Tour highest ranked team at the conclusion of the MCT Championship

It's great they changed the qualifying format, but I still think 16 teams is too many for the Scotties and provincials in general.

I'm not sure if 16 is too many, if you think of it as the best 16 from all over the province, to then battle for the provincial title. I like that they have a lot of opportunity to get a berth, whether regions, berth bonspiel, points etc.
There was another thread discussing a similar topic, and in terms of Ontario, I think changing the qualification format would be idea. The complaint coming that 4 teams from the North automatically qualify after one round of competition and 6 from the south have to go through Zones, Regionals and then the challenge round (if they don't qualify through regionals). I think the defending champion berth is a gift. Manitoba, Alberta and BC are the only provinces to give a DC berth. Quebec just dropped the DC berth this season.

MCT Berth
The Women's MCT Championships were held this past weekend. The final was a repeat of Last Year's Manitoba Scotties. Cathy Overton-Clapham and Chelsea Carey faced off, with Carey winning over Overton-Clapham 5-4.
With the highest ranking on the Manitoba Curling Tour following the MCT Championship, Chelsea Carey was awarded the MCT Berth into the Manitoba Scotties.
